“Day of the Dead” Celebration Sparks Joy, Amazement, and Wonder at PS 68 in Staten Island

The Day of the Dead, a Mexican tradition that honors the spirits of the departed with love and reverence, came alive for the PS68 R community on November 3 as a multi-cultural ensemble of professional artists performed traditional music and dance for more than 80 students, family members, and community residents.

This family event led by ArtsConnection partner Mexico Beyond Mariachi transported students at PS68 R in Staten Island through a riveting journey spanning over 500 years beginning with the Aztec civilization, delving into how time, geography, climate, and foreign influence have shaped folk traditions to this day.

An ArtsConnection partner since 2005, Mexico Beyond Mariachi’s events and residencies encourage students to look beyond stereotypes and into the fascinating story and history of the Mexican people. Besides family events, ArtsConnection offers residencies in as many as 17 art forms throughout New York City public schools.
