Formative Assessment in the Arts
An Essential of Working and Thinking Like an Artist
All artists use formative assessment in their practice. For most professional artists this is an internalized process honed through experience; for students it is a process that helps them learn to work and think like artists.
Educators help students define clear criteria for success, use protocols to engage students in giving and receiving feedback, and allow them to choose and make their own revisions.
Formative assessment is best practice in any classroom. It is especially powerful in teaching in the arts because it is an essential part of the creative process and encourages every student’s artistic voice.
