Rain Could Not Keep Us from Celebrating NYC Teens

Downpour aside, Saturday, May 20th, was a beautiful day as we gathered on Governors Island (or Paggank, as it is referred to by the Lenape people) to recognize the young people that participated the Spring semester of ArtsConnection’s Teen Programs: Teens Curate Teens (TCT), OnTRaC: College & Career Readiness; Teens Reviewers & Critics (TRaC); AC Music Makers; Arts-Making TRaC; Skill Building Workshops; Pizza and a Movie; and our Teen Advisory Council.

The day’s festivities centered around the opening of the “NAKED : TRUTH” art exhibition curated by the Teens Curate Teens cohort with the support of teaching artist Ed Woodham, and program staff Amanda Guest and Bridget Johnson.

The exhibit features 30 NYC teen artists in celebration of personal and universal narratives that investigate their raw authenticity during a time of major transition. The TCT curators share “as teens we are coming into our own identity – changing physically and mentally. NAKED : TRUTH (although for everyone) is most importantly, for and by us. We hope our peers experience a safe space to appreciate their unique truth at this important time.”

The exhibit will be on display in our house on Governors Island, 408B Colonels Row, through July 30. Visiting hours are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11:00am to 5:00pm.

“ArtsConnection’s Teen Programs strive to be a place where young people can explore, engage, and connect with the arts and other arts-curious teens.
Our finales are a culmination of that work showing all the possibilities when teens are allowed to shine bright in their creative expression.”

— Dionne Thornton, Director of Teen Programs, Community Engagement & Culture Connected
